Lauren Blackford

Bitter Jester Music Festival Judge

At only 23 years old, the word “seasoned” comes to mind when describing Lauren Blackford’s career and music alike.

Blackford solidified her status as a rising star following the release of her self-produced EP, One Too Many Times, in April 2024. After embarking on a Midwest tour that summer, she released her self-directed debut music video and filmed a series of live performances aptly titled the Loft Sessions, which came out in February 2025 and later appeared on the EP's deluxe version, One Too Many Times (...One More Time), on the project's first anniversary.

Drawing comparisons to Fiona Apple, Hayley Williams, and Joni Mitchell, Lauren's emotion-driven melodies underline refreshingly honest lyrics that leave listeners feeling equally comforted and exposed.

Jeff Milo of WDET describes her debut project as an "effervescent blend of pop and indie-rock ballads (that) bounce from pared-back acoustic strums to glitzy electronic flourishes, all while bolstering dulcet vocals that soar into punchy choruses threaded with sweet melodies sure to get stuck in your head for weeks."

Lauren is currently working on her debut full-length album, inspired by her tumultuous coming-of-age in the Midwest. In the meantime, she continues to perform regularly across the state and beyond. Her lively performances and interpersonal charm have graced stages from Ann Arbor's prestigious art fair to Chicago's Navy Pier, and have pegged her as a fan favorite in her hometown of Milan, MI. Crowds everywhere agree: Lauren Blackford is an up-and-comer to be reckoned with.

“Bitter Jester is the happy accident of my career thus far. I submitted on a whim, but it continues to bring so much joy and opportunity to my career and musical relationships. The BJMF community rocks—so honored to be a part of it.”

- Lauren Blackford

Blackford competed in Bitter Jester's 18th season in 2024, coming in 3rd place and winning Vocalist of the Year at the finale after being selected as a Wild Card. Her experience with Bitter Jester has been a "happy accident," which has led to shows, writing sessions, and long-term relationships with fellow competitors.

She is so excited to be returning to BJMF as a judge and can't wait to hear what this season has in store!
